5th Grade Weekly News

January 22, 2019

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I hope you had a lovely 3 day weekend and celebrated Martin Luther King Jr in some way yesterday. We have been talking about how his work during his short life can inspire us all to work towards justice and acts of kindness. We are writing letters to MLK Jr. and creating portraits of him. These will be up in the classroom for Open House this coming weekend. Students are encouraged to attend 11 am Mass this Saturday January 27 for the kick off of Catholic Schools week. If students wear their uniform and participate in the choir, they will receive a free dress pass. There are many fun activities that will follow for Catholic Schools week. Join us Wednesday for SMS annual Grandfriends Mass and breakfast. And Don’t forget the Global Reading Challenge on Friday, February 1st at 1pm in the Konionia Room.

Field Trip week is finally here! We will be leaving Friday at 9:30 for Bellevue College. Thank you again to: Grant Kenn, Maya Kim, Dana Armstrong, Suria El Bietar, Phan Ching, Ilena Gonzalez, for driving and chaperoning. Please remember, if you are not current in your volunteer paperwork, or have the VIRTUS training, please follow up with that right away in order to help us on the day of the field trip. Mrs. Morrissey has sent out the instructions and documents to follow up with. Please let me know if you have any questions, or concerns regarding these requirements.

Even if you are not a driver  and would like to join us, please feel free to. Also please remember that all students need to pack a sack lunch. We will eat on campus before returning.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Today we welcomed the Accreditation team that will be working with our school. They will return again on February 12-14th to visit classrooms.

Just a reminder that January 28th through February 1st is Catholic schools week. Please join us on Sunday January 27th for our open house between morning Masses. Please also join us for the Global Reading Challenge which will take place on February 1st at 1pm.

If you have not yet done so, please return your permission slip and $5 for our field trip to the Planetarium on January  25th. Students are also asked to pack a lunch since we will be eating at Bellevue College Campus before returning home. We actually have more than  enough drivers and a lot of Chaperones!! Thank you drivers: Grant Kenn, Maya Kim, Dana Armstrong, Suria El Bietar, Phan Ching, Ilena Gonzalez. Dear 5th Grade Families,

Happy New Year!!  Hoping everyone had a peaceful and restful break!

Students returned today and did a great job getting back into learning and showing their understanding of classroom expectations. We also spent time reflecting on 2018 and thinking of resolutions for 2019. We ended the day with a lovely surprise by Maricela Rodriguez, who brought in Mexican Hot Chocolate and Rosca de Reyes. Thank you Maricela!

In addition, today we welcomed 2 new students, that are visiting from Korea, to our class. Ben and Julia will be with us until the end of February.

Please don’t forget that permission slips went home before Christmas break for our field trip to the Planetarium. Please note that there is a $5 fee for attending. Students are also asked to pack a lunch since we will be eating at Bellevue College before returning home. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU ARE ABLE TO DRIVE AND CHAPERONE.

I have extra copies if your student needs one.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Thank you to all the families for participating in our Diaper Drive. We will take them to Mass with us on Wednesday to be blessed before sending them out.

As we prepare for the Christmas/Winter break, we will be finishing up a few lessons. Tomorrow students will take Chapter 4 assessment in Math. Review Packets went home today to finish and study from. We have also finished reading Wonder. Students have been asked to finish the last pages in their packet before they leave for break. We will start the Movie tomorrow and compare and contrast it with the book on Thursday. If you would not like your student to watch the movie, please let me now.

 

On Friday, 5th grade has been invited to watch the Middle School Geography Bee starting at 10:30 am. Students will then be dismissed for Christmas Break at noon.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I am holding my breath for the Seahawk win as I get this off. A few reminders as we finish up the 2018 year.

As we continue to participate in Mass for the month of December, the 5th grade class will be performing a small skit before Mass on Wednesday, December 12th  to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Please join us if you are able this Advent season during Mass.We are also collecting diapers for the Diaper Drive until December 19th. We would love a 100% class participation, whether that be donating one diaper or a pack of diapers! Thank you to all who have brought in diapers already.On Thursday, December 13th at 1 pm our school will be having a Special Olympics National Banner School Assembly. Please join us in the Koinonia Room.

Please help me remind your student that students are not allowed to share, or trade food during lunch. Students are to eat their own lunch that they bring to school or buy. Thank you. Finally, homework has been lacking effort, missing assignments or incomplete.  Could you please encourage your student to turn in their best effort homework.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I hope you enjoyed a blessed Thanksgiving! Thank you for taking the time to meet with me for student conferences. I was very impressed with the students who joined in the conferences and their focus on setting goals for the new trimester. I’m excited for the growth and learning to be shared this trimester!

The holiday season is upon us! The 5th grade class has the responsibility to help prepare Mass during December. That means students from our class will participate in the readings and as gift bearers. Please join us if you are able this Advent season during Mass.

WEEK PREVIEW:

Math: Chapter 3, Multi-digit Multiplication, Review and Test on Friday.

Reading: Read for 30 mins, Wonder: Part 6 “August”. We will also discuss different types of figurative language found throughout the novel.

Wordly Wise: Lesson 6

LA/Grammar: Focus on singular and plural  nouns

Writing: Introduce and discuss the difference between Expository and Narrative Writing.

Religion: Sacraments- Students will work with partners on creating a slide presentation on the 7 sacraments – Our goal is to present to class on Friday.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I hope you had a nice three day weekend and thank you to those Veterans in your life who served our country.

Thanksgiving family donations are due this week. Please let me know if you need a reminder of your designated item. I have had some requests to extend the book order. I will place all orders on Friday, November 16th. Thank you so much for all the orders that came in. I am excited to purchase more books for our classroom library with the points we earned.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Happy November!  With the end of the trimester this week, Veteran’s Day, conferences and Thanksgiving, this month is going to fly by.

Every year our school community helps to provide families in need with the means to celebrate Thanksgiving. Our classes are working in teams to collect goods for one of the five families that our school is sponsoring through St. Vincent de Paul this year. We will be working with Ms. Ruff’s second graders. Attached is list of student names and designated items for them to bring in before November 16th. The  family we are supporting has 3 little girls and a baby boy ranging from 7 years old to 6 months old. In addition to your designated item, if you would like to join me in donating diapers or wipes for the family, I will include them in their gift basket.

Reading: Read for 30 mins, work on AR’s,10 AR points due before end of 1st trimester. Wonder: Part 4 Jack, Focus on writing a summary and figurative language.

Religion: Sacramentals, Signs of God’s Love, We will visit the church on Tuesday to meet with Fr. Don and tour the church to view some of the sacramental symbols used during the 7 sacraments.

Social Studies:  Finish presentations.

Science: Earth and Space Systems: Modeling the Earth and Sun, Exploring how the Earth, Sun and Moon interact and effects of gravity.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Students worked hard last week completing their ITBS testing. Results will be presented and discussed during conferences.

We are almost back to a normal routine week. Due to Halloween this week, I have decided not to assign any Wordly Wise assignments. We do have spelling.

Students also worked well in researching a Saint during religion and created a mini book of a Saint they selected. In addition, students worked very well with a partner creating a slide presentation on an ancient civilization/culture. Students will be presenting both projects to the class this week.

I will be introducing our first science unit this week, Earth and Space Systems. The curriculum is from the Carolina Biological Supply Company and focuses our science units on a learning cycle which asks students to act like scientists and think, predict, explore and magnify their learning through class discussion, small group work and informal teacher talks.

October 31              Halloween ( no Mass); Non-uniform, bring costume to change into

November 1            All Saints Day Mass 9 am; Full uniform

WEEK PREVIEW:

Math: Working on adding and subtracting using whole and decimal numbers

Language Arts: Students  are finishing and editing their narrative stories.

Reading: Read for 30 mins, work on AR’s, Finishing part 2 of Wonder and will start part 3: Summer. We will take our 2nd vocabulary quiz on new vocabulary words we find in the text.

Religion: Protecting God’s Children lesson, we focus on recognizing risky adult behavior and teaching children how to trust their own instincts when adults exhibit frightening and confusing behavior.

Social Studies:  Exploring early civilization/cultures of the Americas, giving presentations.

Science: Introducing Earth and Space Systems

Dear 5th Grade Families,

First I want to THANK YOU for a wonderful birthday celebration! It was a wonderful day showered with wonderful cards, treat and decorations! Thank you for making me feel so special!

We have a short week with no school on Friday and Moveathon on Thursday! Please get those pledges in! Due to the short week we will NOT have any Wordly Wise this week and we will take our spelling test on Thursday.

I passed back most of the tests that we took last week. For the math, wordly wise, religion and social studies, I allowed students to recorret the questions they got wrong. For each problem that they get right of those that were marked wrong, I will give them a ½ point. I am recalculating the test and will return them to the students on Thursday with their final grade.

Students can be completing Accelerated Reader quizzes when they finish a book at home. Students are asked to have 10 points by the end of the 1st trimester. If you have not turned in your technology form. Please do so as soon as possible.

WEEK PREVIEW:

Language Arts: In Writer’s Workshop, students are writing Halloween stories. Grammar: Simple, compound and complex sentences

Spelling: Long o, Students are expected to turn in the Monday-Wednesday assignments on Thursday (on lined paper.) Spelling test will be on Thursday.

Reading: Novel Study: WONDER. We are reading the first chapter as a whole and investigating  new vocabulary by using context clues. We will have a Vocabulary quiz on Wednesday over the words in their packet from the book  pages 1-57 ( You can find these words in the Wonder packet page 21.)

Math:Starting Chapter 2, Adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals.  Homework should be coming home nightly.

Religion: We study the seven sacraments in 5th grade. This week is an overview, and then we will dive deeper into each sacrament as the year goes.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I have been writing weekly 5th grade letters and posting them on the 5th grade webpage. I’m not sure if all parents are getting/reading them so I have decided to send them out by email as well. You can see my last 2 by logging on to our webpage. If you do not wish to receive this email weekly, please let me know and I will take you off the list. You can always find information for what is happening in our class on the website.

We had our first publishing party last week. Students created a personal narrative by pre writing/brainstorming, writing a first draft,  edited their work as well as peer editing others work and typed a final draft. We celebrated their wonderful writing with juice and cookies after sharing them aloud.

Please note that we are finishing up on a lot of Chapters/Units this week. Students have been preparing well for their understanding of the content. Please remind your students to look over the review materials for their tests.

Students can be completing Accelerated Reader quizzes when they finish a book at home. Students are asked to have 10 points by the end of the 1st trimester. If you have not turned in your technology form. Please do so as soon as possible.

 

WEEK PREVIEW:

Language Arts: In Writer’s Workshop we are writing fall poems using different poetry techniques such as metaphors, similes and personification.

Grammar: Compound Predicates

Spelling: Long i, Students are expected to turn in the Monday-Thursday assignments on Friday (on lined paper.) Spelling test will be on Friday.

Vocabulary: Lesson 3, Vocabulary test on Lesson 3 will be Friday. If students receive a 75% or less on the test, they are able to correct their test or retake it for a higher score.

Reading: Novel Study: WONDER. We are reading the first chapter as a whole and investigating  new vocabulary by using context clues.

Math:Place Value, comparing decimals. Homework should be coming home nightly.We are reviewing chapter 1 this week and will have our first chapter 1 math test this Thursday, October 4.

Religion: We will continue to discuss the sacrament of Baptism. Chapter 5 test on Friday.

Social Studies: We have been reading an overview of American Land, American People. We will take a end of unit test on Thursday.

Dear 5th Grade Families,

I am very proud of the way students are remembering to turn in their homework and bring back their books and materials they bring home when working on assignments. Please encourage your student to check their planner and backpack before leaving school to make sure they have all their materials to be successful with their homework at home. I am still signing planners, so students should be writing down all homework in their planners.

Students can be completing Accelerated Reader quizzes when they finish a book at home. Students are asked to have 10 points by the end of the 1st trimester.

If you have not turned in your technology form. Please do so as soon as possible.

Language Arts: In Writer’s Workshop we are editing and publishing our first piece of writing. We hope to have everyone finished by Thursday and have a publishing party!

Dear 5th Grade Families,
Thank you all who made it to Back to School Night!  It was nice to meet so many of you and start to put names and faces together!

Students will begin with new spelling/vocabulary and math homework routines this week. Please encourage your student to write neatly in their planners in order to keep organized with nightly homework as well as turn in their best effort work! Also remind your student to double check their backpack before dismissal to make sure they have their appropriate workbooks or books for homwork.

Language Arts: In Writer’s Workshop we continue to discuss the writing elements of a good Personal Narrative.  We have started on the first rough draft and will continue to fine tune student writing this week. Grammar: Subjects and Predicates
Spelling: Long a, Students are expected to turn in the Monday-Thursday assignments on Friday. Spelling test will be on Friday.
Vocabulary: Lesson 1, First Vocabulary test on Lesson 1 will be Friday.
Reading: We will be reading a short story and identify the 5 main story elements. We will also talk about the Big 4 good readers do: Predict, Questions, Connections, Summarizing.
Math:We started our first math Unit on Place Value. Homework should be coming home nightly.
Religion: This week we have been reading about how God created the world in Genesis 1:1-2.
Social Studies: We begin a small unit on an overview of American People. American Land.

Dear 5th Grade Families,
What a great way to start the school year. Thank you for helping your student with a wonderful transition to 5th grade. The first few days last week were spent reuniting with old friends, meeting new ones, learning expectations and getting use to new classroom routines.
This week is used to finish STAR testing and evaluate student academic levels. We will continue to learn how to use the planners to support organizing homework assignments. We will start homework routines next week with the implementation of math and spelling homework. My expectations around homework are that students take their time and turn in QUALITY work. I look through homework each week and if I feel a student rushed through the assignment, I will return the assignment to be corrected or completed during “Relish”. As questions come up around homework, please do not hesitate to email, call or write me a note.
Please help remind your student to have their binder and planner with them when they come to class each morning. We file ongoing assignments in our binders and they may need them in class.
I look forward to seeing you all Thursday night at 6 pm for Back to School Night.
WEEK PREVIEW
Writer’s Workshop: We started Writer’s Workshop and learning the writing elements to create a Personal Narrative.
Reading Workshop: We are discussing the 5 main story elements: character, setting, plot, conflict and theme. We are reading different small passages to locate the elements.
LA: We have started working in our Grammar workbooks. This week’s focus is on different kind of sentences.
Math: STAR testing and Inspirational Math
Religion: We are creating self portraits and listing gifts that God has given us. We also talked about The Bible and are working on an activity to help locate different bible verses.
Growth Mindset: We read, The Most Magnificent Thing. In groups students are brainstorming, planning, sketching and eventually building a creation that can be used within the classroom. Students may be coming home asking for recycled materials.
